책을 보면서 나는 깜짝 놀랐다. 그제야 내가 왜 정리해고를 당했는지를 알게 되었다. 내가 정리해고 대상자가 된 것은 당연한 일이었다. 평소에 나는

‘정리해고를 한다면 내가 제일 먼저 대상자가 되지 않을까?’

2025년 62세에 배우 인생 최초로 여우주연상을 수상한 데미무어는 이런 수상소감을 남겼습니다.

이 일을 45년 넘게 했네요. 배우로써 완전 처음 받는 상입니다.
30년 전 한 프로듀서가 제게 이런 말을 했어요.

“당신은 깊이 있는 배우는 아니에요”

저는 이 말을 믿었어요. 그리고 상을 받을 수 있는 사람이 아니라고 생각했죠. 영화가 흥행해서 돈을 벌수는 있어도 연기로 인정받는 건 기대도 안 했어요.
그 말을 너무 쉽게 믿어버렸던 거에요. 이 말에 대한 믿음은 저를 서서히 망가뜨렸습니다. 몇 년 전에는 이런 생각까지 했어요.

‘이제 정말 끝이야. 보여줄 것도 없어. 사람들도 내게 기대하지 않을거야.’

실망하고, 절망했죠. 왜, 그런 순간이 있잖아요?

우리가 똑똑하지 못하다 느낄 때,
예쁘지도 날씬하지도 않고,
성공하지 못한다고 느낄 때,
스스로 충분하지 않다고 느낄 때.

한 여자분이 제게 이런 말을 했어요.
“스스로 완벽하다 느끼는 순간은 절대 오지 않아요.
하지만 기준을 내려놓기만 하면, 자신의 가치를 알 수 있을 거에요”

내가 사랑하는 일을 할 수 있음을,
제가 여기 속할 수 있다는 사실을,
다시 깨닫게 된 이 순간을 축하하고 싶습니다.

이처럼 의외로 많은 사람들의 인생은 계속해서 반복되는 말, 자기 자신에게 스스로 하는 말, 그리고 다른 사람이 내게 무심코 툭 던진 말들의 영향을 받곤 합니다.

그래서 ‘어떤 사람이 내 주변에 있는가?’ 와 같은 나를 둘러싼 환경이 내 인생에 큰 영향을 미치기도 하죠. 어찌 보면 굉장히 무서운 일입니다. 정말 이렇다면 우리에게는 2가지 선택이 남습니다.

  1. 다른 사람에게 나의 현실을 컨트롤당할 것인가.
  2. 아니면 내가 나의 현실을 컨트롤 할 것인가.

둘 중 하나입니다. 아마 이 글을 읽고 있는 분들이라면 누구나 이렇게 생각하실거에요.

나의 현실을 컨트롤 하는 법

일본의 경영컨설턴트이자 작가인 간다 마사노리는 그의 책에서 의외로 간단한 방법을 알려 주었습니다.

나에게 도움되는 말을 반복해서 듣고, 또 말하기만 하면 된다. 자기 자신에게 최면을 거는 것이다. 자기 최면을 걸면 불안한 마음이 사라지면서 자연스럽게 목표를 향해 나아갈 수 있게 된다.

자기 최면이란 내 잠재의식을 내가 프로그래밍하는 방법이다. 다른 사람에 의해 만들어진 기억 회로를 일단 차단시킨 후 자신에게 유리하도록 재구축하는 것이다.<비상식적 성공법칙> 간다 마사노리

어떤가요? 너무 쉬운 방법이죠? 하지만 여기에는 가장 어려운 것이 숨어 있습니다. 바로 ‘메타인지’인데요. 메타인지란 ‘내가 지금 어떤 생각을 하고 있고, 그 생각이 나에게 어떤 영향을 미치는지 알아차리는 능력’을 말합니다.

말하자면, 내 언어 습관을 객관적으로 바라볼 수 있는 시선이에요. 우리가 무심코 내뱉는 말이나, 누군가에게 들은 말이 내 믿음의 체계를 어떻게 형성하고 있는지 깨닫지 못한다면, 결국 왜 그런지도 모른채 그 말대로 이끌려갈 수밖에 없습니다.

반면에 “지금 내가 왜 이런 말을 하고 있지?” “이 말이 내게 실제로 도움이 되는 걸까?”라고 스스로 질문하며, 내 말과 생각의 실체를 바로 보는 순간부터 인생의 주도권을 되찾아올 수 있습니다.

말에 대한 메타인지를 훈련하기 위해 작은 순간부터 스스로에게 끊임없이 질문을 해 보는 습관을 가져보라고 말씀드리고 싶어요. 하루를 마무리할 때,

“오늘 내가 나에게 가장 많이 했던 말은 무엇일까?”

“그 말은 내 목표에 도움이 되었나?”

같은 질문을 적어보는 거죠.

이렇게 나의 말과 생각을 한 걸음 떨어져 지켜보면서 모니터링하는 연습을 반복하다 보면, 어느 순간부터 부정적 언어 습관을 빠르게 알아차리고 다른 말로 교체하는 능력이 생깁니다.

바로 이때부터 ‘내 말이 만든 현실’이 아니라 ‘내가 원하는 현실’을 말과 행동으로 직접 그려나갈 수 있게 되는거죠. 이것이 바로 메타인지의 힘입니다.

저도 이번에 간다 마사노리의 책을 통해 그동안 어렴풋하게 알고 있던 ‘말의 힘’을 좀 더 확실하게 인식하게 되었어요. 예전에 명상요가 지도를 할 때 ‘내가 하는 말을 들으면서’ 수업을 했는데요. 그 훈련이 바로 메타인지 연습시간이었다는 것도 알게 되었답니다. 메타인지 연습이 감정 조절 등 내 인생 전반에 두루 영향을 미칠 수 있다는 걸 알게 되실거에요!
